Colorbond, Zinc-Aluminium, Gauge and Profile
Colorbond steel is the standard choice: zinc-aluminium base steel with a baked-on colour finish, in a range wide enough to match a terracotta roof, a dark tile roof or a modern townhouse trim. Bare zinc-aluminium is the same steel without the colour. Base metal thickness is worth asking about: standard eaves guttering is 0.42 mm, and 0.48 mm is the heavier gauge, which resists denting from ladders and branch strikes and holds its line between brackets when loaded with wet leaf. On a heavily treed block that is money well spent.
Profile choice follows the roof:
- Quad: the rounded, high-front shape most homes here carry. Good capacity, widely available in Colorbond colours, and a sensible default on a post-war tile roof.
- Half-round: the open half-circle shape, usually carried on external brackets. It suits the pre-war slate and terracotta homes, and its curved base is less inclined to hold packed debris than a squared trough, though it carries less water than a Quad of similar width.
- D-gutter: flat front, rounded back, a clean edge that sits well on the newer townhouses along Canterbury Road.
- Fascia and box gutter: a fascia gutter forms fascia and gutter in one piece of steel and is common on newer builds. A box gutter runs internally between roof planes or behind a parapet, and because it discharges into the building when it fails, its sizing, sump and overflow matter more than anything on the eaves.

The run above is only as good as the outlets below it. We size and position downpipes for the flow the roof produces, not for where the old holes happen to be, and that usually means 90 mm round or 100 by 75 rectangular. The rectangular section takes a little more water and sits neatly against a wall. The round is easier to rod out when a gum nut or a wad of leaf lodges in the bend, which on these streets happens. Position beats size: an outlet near a valley or internal corner, where two roof planes concentrate their flow, clears water a larger pipe at the far end never reaches in time. Long elevations and steep faces need an extra outlet rather than one bigger one. Brackets go on at roughly 1.2 metre spacing, tightened up where a length carries the dead weight of a full gutter, and every one is screwed into fascia we have checked first.
