Downpipes, Outlets and the Long Wantirna Roofline
This is where houses of this era are most often short-changed. A long single-storey roof can present twenty or more metres of gutter to a single downpipe at one end, which means the water at the far end has to travel the whole run before it can escape. Add a slight loss of fall from a sagging bracket and it never gets there in a downpour. When we replace, we size and place the outlets for the flow the roof produces rather than reusing the old positions, generally 90 mm round or 100 by 75 rectangular. The rectangular carries slightly more and sits flush against a wall, the round is easier to clear when bark or a twig wedges in the top. Capacity comes from three things: the roof area draining into the run, the pitch of that roof, since a steep plane catches more driving rain than its footprint suggests, and how fast the downpipes empty what lands in it. Get any of those wrong and the gutter overflows no matter how clean it is.
