If you are trying to work out what you are looking at, the symptom is usually a good guide. A ceiling stain after heavy rain points to a flashing, valley or a cracked tile above that spot. Grey dust and crumbs of mortar in the gutter mean the ridge pointing is breaking down. Tiles visibly out of line, or a corner of metal roof lifting in the wind, are doing exactly what they look like they are doing. A leak that only shows in driving rain is often flashing, and it is the kind of fault worth having looked at properly rather than guessed at. The roof under your feet decides how the repair is done. Concrete and terracotta tiles are repaired tile by tile, with rebedding and repointing along the ridges and hips. Terracotta and older slate often need matched or salvaged pieces, because the profile and colour have to sit right next to what is already there. Colorbond and other metal roofs are a different job again: refixing sheets, replacing rusted fixings, resealing laps and flashings, and cutting in new sheeting where corrosion has gone through. Metal and sheet-metal work is where our team’s fabrication background shows, so a patched or replaced section is folded and fixed to suit the run rather than bodged over.

This is the question worth settling before you spend anything. A repair fixes a specific fault and leaves the rest of the roof as it is. A restoration is the whole roof: cleaned, rebedded and repointed end to end, then sealed with a three-coat coating system. Usually, yes. We match by profile and colour, and where a tile line has been discontinued we source salvaged or close-match tiles so the repair does not stand out. On terracotta and slate this matters most, and it is worth doing properly.
