You want a straight answer on what new gutters will cost before anyone climbs a ladder. That is the honest starting point for most gutter replacement jobs in Knoxfield, VIC, and it is where Eminent Roofing & Restoration begins too. We measure your roof, list every part, and price the new gutters, downpipes and fascia as one itemised quote, and we have done exactly that on more than 2,000 projects. If the old guttering is rusted through, sagging off the fascia, or still overflowing after a clean, replacement is the fix, though we will tell you plainly when a section repair would do instead. Call 0451 200 159 for a free on-site inspection and a written, itemised quote.

Old gutter removed along a tile roof edge

Knoxfield’s 1970s Roofs and the Guttering That Came With Them

Knoxfield was orchard country until it was subdivided through the 1970s and 1980s, and much of the suburb still carries that generation of homes, concrete tile on quarter-acre blocks through Carrington Park and the streets around it, under the City of Knox. That timing matters for guttering, because a run hung in the 1970s has had forty-odd years of Melbourne weather working on it. Right across the suburb that original steel is now reaching the end together, rusting from the inside and pulling off tired fascia, which is why so much of our Knoxfield work is a full replacement rather than a patch. Newer Colorbond runs sit on the townhouses and factory units nearer the Ferntree Gully Road corridor and Scoresby Road, but the older residential streets are the ones due. Knox’s Vegetation Protection Overlay works to keep that tree cover up, requiring removed trees to be replaced with new indigenous canopy, so leaf load off mature trees stays a steady factor in how these runs fill and how we size them.

From the Old Run Coming Down to Disposal

A replacement is a one-off job, and the quote spells out every part of it: removing the old gutters and downpipes and taking them away; supplying and fitting new gutters in your chosen material, gauge, profile and colour; new brackets and fixings set to the correct fall; new downpipes sized and placed for the roof, where the old ones are past it; fascia repair or replacement where the timber or metal is damaged; and leaving the property clean. Fascia and downpipes are done by the same team, because there is no point hanging new steel off a fascia that has softened behind it. If gutter guard makes sense while the run is open, we can fit it on the same quote, and nothing gets added later without your say-so.

Why the Ageing Stock Points to a Full Replacement

When guttering fails because it has simply aged out, it tends to fail everywhere at once, not in one tidy spot. On a Knoxfield home where the run is the original 1970s or 1980s steel, patching one length usually just moves the leak a few metres along, because the next join is only a season or two behind it. That is the honest reason a full replacement often works out cheaper here than a string of repairs. Where a home has already had newer sections fitted, or the failure really is isolated, we say so and quote the smaller job.

What a Gutter Replacement Costs in Knoxfield

There is no flat rate, and any number quoted before someone measures your roof is a guess. What moves the price is the linear metres of guttering; whether the home is single or double storey, since a second storey means safe roof access and sometimes scaffolding; the roof size and pitch; whether the fascia and downpipes need doing too; and the profile, gauge and material you choose. Rather than hand you a ballpark, we measure the run, note the access, check the fascia, and price each part on one itemised quote.

Which Gutters to Fit: Colorbond, Zincalume, Gauge and Profile in Knoxfield

New guttering is usually Colorbond steel, the common choice for its colour range and corrosion resistance, a zinc-aluminium base with a baked-on colour finish. Zincalume, the same coated steel without the colour coat, and galvanised steel are options depending on the look and the budget. Gauge counts on a full-house run: we roll domestic guttering in 0.42mm and step up to a heavier 0.48mm on long lengths, so the new run holds its shape and its fall better than the tired one coming off.

The profile matters as much as the metal. Quad, the rounded high-front shape, matches what most Knoxfield homes already wear and suits a like-for-like look. D-gutter, a squarer, deeper box profile, carries more water where the roof calls for it. Half-round gives a softer, traditional line, and a fascia gutter, wide and deep, doubles as the fascia on a modernised facade. Colorbond’s full colour range means the new gutters can match or lift the look of the fascia and roof.

Downpipes, Fascia and Brackets That Carry the Water

Even a perfectly hung gutter is let down by downpipes that cannot keep pace. New downpipes come as a round 90mm or a rectangular 100 by 50, and on a Knoxfield replacement we often find the original run had too few. As a guide we fit one for every eight to twelve metres of gutter and at least one per roof plane, adding more where a larger roof drains to a single length, so the water clears rather than backing up. Brackets are spaced to hold the fall under a full load, closer on long runs and deeper profiles, and all of it depends on sound fascia, which on these ageing homes is often where the first rot shows and why we check and repair it as part of the same job.

Sizing a Gutter That Will Not Overflow on a Knoxfield Roof

The most common reason a clean gutter still spills is that it was undersized to begin with, and a lot of the 1970s guttering around Knoxfield was. Capacity is matched to the roof area draining into it and how hard it rains, so a larger or steeper roof needs a deeper profile, an extra downpipe, or both. A high-front Quad or a deeper D-gutter holds more, and a slotted gutter, with overflow slots along the back, lets a flow beyond the design load escape to the outside rather than back up under the eaves; where that is not wanted, we carry the capacity in the profile and the downpipes instead. We size each run to the roof feeding it rather than the tired one we are taking off.

Backed by a 10-Year Workmanship Warranty

Every gutter and fascia replacement we fit is covered by a 10-year workmanship warranty, in writing. Because gutter and fascia work is installation, that warranty covers the way it is fitted: the falls that carry water to the downpipes, the seals at the joins, and the brackets holding the run to the fascia. The steel we fit is made to the relevant Australian Standards, and if anything in our workmanship is not right within that period, we come back and put it right.

Rust, Sag and Overflow: When It Is Past a Clean

Gutter cleaning in Knoxfield clears leaves and lets water run again. It cannot fix metal that has given up. If you are seeing any of the following, you are past maintenance and into replacement:

  • rust holes, or rust streaks running down the fascia and the wall below
  • sections sagging or pulling away from the fascia brackets
  • split or open seams and joins that leak even when the gutter is empty
  • water still spilling over the front after the gutter has been cleared
  • downpipes rusted, crushed, or no longer draining

One or two of these on an old run usually means the guttering has reached the end.

What Knoxfield Homeowners Ask Before Replacing Gutters

My house is from the 1970s, do all the gutters need doing at once?

Usually, yes, if it is still the original run. Guttering that has aged out tends to fail along its whole length rather than in one spot, so replacing it in one go is generally cheaper than a string of repairs. If part of the run is newer or the failure really is isolated, we quote the smaller job.

Should the new gutters and downpipes be bigger than the old ones?

Often. A lot of the 1970s guttering here was undersized, and had too few downpipes, so stepping up to a deeper profile and adding an outlet or two is what stops the overflow for good. We only do it where the roof needs it.

Can I just buy the guttering from a hardware store and fit it myself?

You can buy lengths off the shelf, and for a short, ground-level run some people do. A full house replacement needs the old run removed, the falls set correctly, safe roof access, and the joins sealed properly. Done wrong it leaks, and the fix costs more than the saving.

Do you replace the fascia and downpipes as well?

Yes, where they need it. If the fascia timber or metal behind the gutter is rotted or rusted, or the downpipes are crushed or blocked, we replace them as part of the same job and list them on the quote. If they are still sound we leave them.
